Cyclone Mandous- Tamil nadu

Rainfall is brought to several regions of Tamil Nadu by the cyclonic storm "Mandous."

As the cyclonic storm "Mandous" moved closer to the State's coastline, certain areas of Tamil Nadu had mild to moderate rainfall and other areas experienced heavy rains.

As the cyclonic storm "Mandous" moved closer to the State's coastline, some areas of Tamil Nadu experienced light to moderate rainfall and other areas experienced heavy showers, according to the India Meteorological Department on Friday. The storm is expected to cross the coast close to here starting at midnight.

The cyclonic storm caused severe rainfall in certain parts here (including Nungambakkam—7 CM), while it was mild to moderate in other areas.

The cyclone, which on December 9 deteriorated into a cyclonic storm after being a strong cyclonic storm for less than 24 hours, is being monitored by Doppler weather radars, according to the IMD. It is now located around 260 km south-southeast of Chennai and 180 km east-northeast of Karaikal.

According to reports, the United Arab Emirates chose the name Mandous, which is an Arabic phrase that meaning "treasure chest" and is pronounced "mandous."

As a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph, the storm is very likely to move nearly northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjacent south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota near Mamallapuram during Saturday's early morning hours.

There have been at least five flights from here that were scheduled to depart between 6 PM and midnight today cancelled. Due to water logging in a number of regions, trains, including suburban services, were run, and there was minor interruption in bus service.

Several districts had shuttered their schools and institutions.

After the IMD issued a cyclone warning, the territory authority in neighbouring Puducherry declared a holiday for all schools and institutions in the Puducherry and Karaikal territories on Friday and Saturday.

A Namassivayam, the minister of housing and education in Puducherry, stated in a statement that the administration has heeded the IMD's warning that a powerful cyclone will affect the Karaikal and Puducherry areas as a result of the storm in the Bay of Bengal.

He stated that starting on Friday, all schools and universities will be closed for two days.

All departments involved in relief efforts were prepared by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, and rescue squads were sent out to deal with any emergency.

At the port of Puducherry, a storm warning signal flag number five has been raised, and fishermen have been advised not to go out to sea.

With representatives from the Revenue Department and the Disaster Management Department, Chief Minister N Rangasamy held deliberations.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm "Mandous" is expected to reach the coast of Tamil Nadu starting at midnight and caused mild to moderate rainfall and heavy showers in some areas of northern coastal Tamil Nadu.

Widespread rainfall, ranging from light to moderate to heavy, was seen in coastal areas and other regions of the State on December 9 as a result of the cyclonic storm. According to an IMD official, Kodaikanal received 5 CM of rain. Relief shelters have been used to house people in vulnerable places.

In the 130 years between 1891 and 2021, between Chennai and Puducherry, 12 cyclones have passed the coast, according to S Balachandran, head of the IMD-Regional Meteorological Centre. It would be the 13th cyclone to traverse the coast (between Chennai and Puducherry) if this one makes landfall close to Mamallapuram.

Chief Minister M K Stalin conducted an assessment of the level of readiness in this disaster management control room while meeting with monitoring officers and district authorities.

For security, relief, and rescue operations, up to 16,000 police officers and 1,500 Home guards have been sent here. In addition, 12 District Disaster Response Force teams and a 40-member team of the Tennessee State Disaster Response Force are on standby.

The NDRF and State Disaster Response Force teams have already sent around 400 men to coastal locations, including those close to the Cauvery delta districts.

The IMD said that Doppler weather radars are keeping an eye on the cyclone, which on December 9 weakened into a cyclonic storm after less than 24 hours as a severe cyclonic storm. According to Balachandran, it was located around 135 miles southeast of Mamallapuram (on Friday at 7.30 PM).

During the late Friday night and early hours of Saturday, the cyclonic storm is highly likely to reach the coast close to Mamallapuram as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph.

Mamallapuram, often known as Mahabalipuram, is located around 50 kilometres away.

Mandous, which is an Arabic term that is pronounced "man-dous," meaning "treasure chest," and was apparently chosen as the name by the United Arab Emirates.

Due to water logging, the rains caused considerable bus service interruption, and at least 13 flights from here have been cancelled. There were operating trains, including suburban services.

Bus services in and around Mamallapuram and on the East Coast Road would be halted two hours before and after the storm makes landfall, according to Transport Minister SS Sivasankar. Buses ply as usual in coastal districts of Chennai, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore and Villupuram, he said.

In coastal areas, schools and colleges were closed, and Saturday has also been proclaimed a vacation for educational institutions.

On December 10, most areas will likely witness a decrease in rainfall, however isolated parts in northern interior Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and neighbouring southern Andhra Pradesh are forecast to have heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

The IMD said that gale winds with gusts of up to 100 kmph are prevalent across the southwest Bay of Bengal. From Friday evening, it will progressively diminish to 70 to 80 kph with gusts to 90 kph, 55 to 65 kph with gusts to 75 kph by December 10 early morning, and 30 to 40 kph with gusts to 50 kph by Saturday night.

Several localities here and nearby had severe rainfall (7 CM) over the 24-hour period ending on Friday morning, and other coastal regions, including Chengelpet and Nagapattinam, reported sporadic, mild to moderate rains (upto 3 CM).

The territorial government of the neighbouring Puducherry territory has announced Friday and Saturday as holidays for all schools and institutions in the Karaikal and Puducherry areas. The Department of Revenue and Disaster Management has sent out rescue teams. N Rangasamy, the chief minister, had meetings with senior authorities.
